FAQ

What is the cracking sound that is heard when people get adjusted?

The sound that is often heard with a chiropractic adjustment is not the sound of bones cracking. When two bones come together to form a joint they are encased in a joint capsule made of cartilage. Inside this capsule is synovial fluid that lubricates the joints and reduces friction on the surface of the neighboring bones as they move across one another. Air bubbles form in this fluid and when the joint is moved in a certain way these bubbles can pop in a process some call cavitation and others (more accurately) call tribonucleation. Whatever it is called, it is a harmless phenomena and nothing to be frightened of.

Who should see a chiropractor?

Individuals who come to a chiropractic office typically present with headaches, neck and shoulder pain, mid-back pain, and lower back and hip pain. However, one does not need to have pain to come see a chiropractor in Canandaigua NY. Some people come because it feels great and they feel benefit from regular (monthly or bi-weekly) visits. Most patients simply wish to feel better and discontinue treatment when they do, coming back next time there is a problem. There is no pressure to come for regular maintenance visits but it is welcomed and encouraged in those that wish to do so.

Is Chiropractic safe?

For most individuals, chiropractic is very safe. The doctor of Chiropractic's education does much to prepare them for deeming who would likely benefit from care and who would be harmed by it. During your first visit the doctor will take a thorough history and perform an exam to make sure that you are a good candidate for chiropractic. If chiropractic is not right for you or would be unsafe, you will not receive it in this office and will not be charged for your visit.

Is chiropractic treatment painful?

No, most people enjoy the feeling. It can be surprising at first, as your body will likely experience foreign sensations. But the process is very safe and not painful.

How often will I come and how long will the treatment last?

Sessions are booked in 20 minutes windows, so the treatment sessions last from 15-20 minutes, with the initial visit taking a little longer (roughly 40 minutes). Treatment frequency is anywhere from 1-2 visits per week, depending on the severity of the condition and how long you have had this problem. As far as how many weeks the treatment will take, that depends. Most reasonably healthy people will see excellent results in 2-4 weeks. However, some see results instantly and others may take longer. Every effort will be made to get you better as soon as possible and if progress is not forthcoming a change in treatment plan will be made or a referral to a different healthcare provider will be suggested.

What does a Doctor of Chiropractic's Education Look Like?

The doctor of chiropractic program at New York Chiropractic College is a 10 trimester program. The first year is dedicated to basic sciences including; biochemistry, cell and tissue biology, pathology, microbiology and extensive training in anatomy (including dissection laboratories) and physiology. The second year is dedicated to clinical sciences, chiropractic technique, and diagnostic training. The third year is a clinical rotation that includes working with patients under the supervision of doctors and associated continuing education in clinical sciences. Candidates in this phase are free to explore preceptorships in various clinics, as Dr. McIntyre did in a sports chiropractic and physical therapy clinic.
